The Names is an exhibition created for Sluice that takes the artist’s signature as its theme. From Duchamp’s subversive R.Mutt to Josh Smith’s shameless painted autographs, artists have cavorted with the significance of the signature. As a rule, in the early 20th century, the signature was a vital addition to the front of an artwork, embedding the artist’s identity into the work with showy authentication. In contemporary art, however, the signature is generally discretely placed on the back of an artwork and a prominent signature has become the signifier of very bad, amateur taste.

Denying the name on the front of the work is an art world game. The value of an artwork depends upon its maker – so excluding the name means only those in the know, know for sure the veracity of the work.

In contemporary culture ‘bad taste’ can quite legitimately be resurrected and become a sign of the most adventurous tastemakers. Thus, there are now artists who knowingly embrace the potential of the signature by signing their work prominently and defiantly on the front.

The Names features a number of small works; each one is about the name / signature of the artist who made it.

The names of the artists in The Names:
Michael Ajerman, Phillip Allen, Sarah Baker, Mike Bartlett, Sara Berman, Kirsty Buchanan, Annabel Dover, Sarah Doyle, Archie Franks, Susie Hamilton, Russell Herron, Paul Housley, Henry Hussey, Marie Jacotey, Jasper Joffe, Matthew Krishanu, Cathy Lomax, Alex Michon, Alex Pearl, Michael Pybus, Harry Pye , Dallas Seitz, Alli Sharma , Corinna Spencer, Mimei Thompson, Gavin Toye, Katherine Tulloh, Rose Wylie

London, New York, Paris, Munich

I am currently showing some Kate Bush paintings at A Side B Side gallery for the "London, New York, Paris, Munich" exhibition curated by Astrid Horkheimer and Harry Pye

Its a great pop music themed show and well worth visit but be quick as it closes on the 14th Sept!

I chose Kate Bush as my subject for the show as she grew up in the area I currently live in South East London. The paintings I made for the show will eventually be made into a zine and feature interesting stories about Kate Bush (I'll post more info about the zine when its printed).

"London, New York, Paris, Munich" is an exhibition celebrating the wonderful world of Pop music.
The show opens on Thursday the 10th of September at A-side B-side Gallery and is curated by Astrid Horkheimer and Harry Pye.

Astrid says: "The aim of L.N.Y.P.M is to have a blast. Highlights of the show include Liam Scully's Beyonce tribute, Barry Thompson's drawings of Kurt Cobain, Paul Hamilton's response to The Beatles White album, a painting of Yoko Ono by Rowland Smith, a Kate Bush fanzine put together by Sarah Doyle, a gigantic Florence and The Machine painting by Julie Bennett, Sandra Turnbull's mixed media tribute to Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Dominic From Luton's work inspired by Paul Young, Pop Star obituary paintings by Hugh Mendes, and a Michael Jackson painting by Geraldine Swayne."

Harry says: "I'm really looking forward to this show. I've been collaborating with Gordon Beswick and Mikey Georgeson on several new paintings of David Bowie, which will be hung together in our "David Bowie Corner".  Gordon and I have also made a new painting of Brian Jones that was inspired by a song on Micko Westmoreland's new L.P "Your's ETC Abc" We're delighted that the p.v. of this show is also the launch party for Micko's excellent album. Hope you can make it on Thursday the 10th as I'm sure a splendid time will be had by all."

ARTY 35: BRITISH CULTURE
summer 2015

British culture is not all about heritage, despite what the tourists may think. But our rich history does infuse many of the things that we live with in day-to-day contemporary Britain and there are historical mementoes all around us. This could be read as an inherent conservatism – a longing to keep things as they ever were. But I think this is to misread the situation. We are a country that has made many mistakes but the physical historic reminders and our public ease in being critical about how things are, mean that we should be optimistic. I genuinely think we are a more tolerant and reasonable nation then practically any other.

The artist / contributors to Arty British Culture are... Larry Achiampong, David Blandy, Jackie Chettur, Annabel Dover, Sarah Doyle, Luci Eyers, Archie Franks, Susie Hamilton, Cathy Lomax, Alex Michon, Gabrielle de la Puente, Matt Rowe, Alli Sharma, Mimei Thompson and Ben Westley Clarke
They look at... hen nights, the NHS, gothic heart-throbs, pub signs, bird watching, David Bowie, abandoned dogs, Carry on Nurse, drinking, allotments, bar taps, Thomas Hardy, charms, breakfast, Ben Whishaw, accents, discrimination…

Thus it is close to the meaning of good things."
